How to extend the life of your furniture

10/15/2012

When you take home a new piece of furniture, we want you to enjoy it as long as you can. To make that happen, here are a few of our favorite tips for extending the life of your furniture.

1. Clean and vacuum your furniture regularly

And by clean, we mean more than just dusting. We will help you find the best cleaner or polish, whether your furniture is wood, metal, glass or polymer. The right cleaning agent will lift out dirt and debris and return the original shine. Choosing the wrong cleaner can lead to films, streaks, sticky or oily residue and damage to the furniture. We’re happy to point you in the right direction!

2. Know your cleaning codes

Most manufacturers will provide cleaning information on your furniture’s tag. Here are the most common letters you will see:

  • W: use only water-based cleaners
  • S: use only solvent-based cleaners
  • WS: Use water-based or solvent-based cleaners
  • X: Vacuum or brush only

As mentioned above, we can help you choose the most trustworthy brands for each of these categories.

And if there isn’t a cleaning code? We’ll still help you choose the right cleaner.

With any cleaner, you should always perform a test on a small, out-of-sight area to make sure it doesn’t stain or otherwise damage the furniture.

3. Take care of accidental rips and tears as soon as you spot them.

Even with the best care, furniture can still get ripped or torn accidentally. Kids, pets, kitchen knives, and moving day can all be a threat to your furniture’s upholstery. If you feel comfortable repairing the furniture, go ahead and have at it. Or, we can help you find a professional who will produce a near-invisible repair that is strong and long-lasting.

4. Beware of sunlight and heat

If your furniture is in direct sunlight each day, the sun’s UV rays can cause slow but permanent damage. Sunlight can damage wood finishes, fade colors and crack leather. Rotate your furniture or place it in areas that don’t get direct sun.

Heat is another threat. Always use a protective pad under hot items, especially on wood. Direct, intense heat can discolor wood finishes and leave a white mark on your table.
